By now we all know that today is Mothers Day. Our mothers form an integral part of our lives and it is safe to say that neither of us would be where we are today without our mothers. I grew up with a single mom and a disciplinarian gran. Each of these women were and still are very influential in my life.
My gran taught me important lessons about respect, obedience, knowing right from wrong and following instructions. I remember one night it was my turn to do the dishes. On this particular day I had tons of homework and I never got around to cleaning the kitchen. After finishing my homework I got ready for bed. I can’t remember the exact time, but my grand mother waited until I was asleep before she woke me up to do the dishes. Needless to say, I never tried that stunt again.
My mom on the other hand nurtured my determination, my fighting spirit and my love of reading. I was taught that anything is possible with hard work. My mom followed her heart and made her passion her career. She showed me that it is possible to do what you love. She always encouraged me to do my best. She believed in me. When I was in grade one and learning to read, we would take monthly trips to the library so that I could loan books to read. I used to love getting my hands on Dr Seuss and Disney stories. When I reached grade three, my mom stepped in and banned me from reading these “picture books”. I was then forced to start reading young adult novels with no pictures. I still laugh when I think about this but I’m grateful because this is how my love affair with books started. An affair that is still going strong today.
I am forever indebted to these two women. I will never be able to repay them for everything that they have imparted but I can show my appreciation. I love you both.
