My name is Hadlay Mclean, I’m a digital marketing strategist based in Cape Town, a beautiful city in South Africa. When I’m not working on digital marketing ideas or creating content strategies for clients you can find me exploring the city in search of inspiring art, good food and wine. Cape Town is a hub of creativity so it’s never too difficult to discover new coffee shops, restaurants or art galleries to explore.
I usually find it quite intimidating to write about myself. However, there’s no way around introducing who I am without having to share a bit about myself. And so, I find myself between a rock and a hard place. Where do I start? I suppose the best place to start is at the beginning.
Taking A Leap Of Faith
One interesting fact that not many people know about me is that I studied Financial Information Systems. I was sure that I was going to make a living in the world of finance one day. Life however had other plans for me. After completing my studies I worked as a finance clerk for a few years before realising that the financial industry was not meant for me. At the time, I was quite active on Twitter and through tweet-ups had met many friends who were working in the burgeoning digital marketing industry. This gave me the confidence to go out on a limb and pursue digital marketing as a viable career.
Finding My Feet In Digital Marketing
I enrolled and completed the Grow Leadership Academy learnership at RLabs and then quickly found a job as a SEO intern at ROI Media – a digital marketing agency. At ROI I cut my teeth in digital marketing, learning how all the aspects of digital marketing work together to produce real world benefits and as the name suggests – return on investment. This was the start of an exciting journey into the ever-changing world of digital marketing and advertising.
Working As A Digital Marketing Strategist
I thoroughly enjoy my work. As a digital marketing strategist I get to have an overall look at what it takes to make a digital campaign successful. I’m fascinated by the analytical aspects of SEO, the creativity of content creation and the opportunity for connection that social media marketing offers. Looking back on the journey I’ve been on in my career I’ve had the opportunity to work on some amazing campaigns and make lifelong friendships along the way. I look forward to where this career in advertising continues to take me.
